National Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day
Thursday, April 26th was National Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day. For the third year in a row, MAGMA participated in this event opening our doors to our MAGMA kids. Our day began with the children shadowing their parent between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM. After that, the children all gathered in the large conference room and were welcomed by our president, Steve Sikorski.
Next Benji Johnson, a Technical Application Manager at MAGMA, explained sales to the children. He discussed how being able to buy houses, put food on the table, buy toys and take vacations all cost money. He told the children that we “make a deal with MAGMA” by trading our time and knowledge for money. With the money we make in this trade, we are able to buy things we want and need in our lives.
Next Matt Jacobs, the Manager of the MAGMAacademy, taught the children about what metal is and how it goes from being a solid to a liquid and back to a solid, but this time it’s shaped in a way that results in a functioning part that other companies need to make their products. You cannot have a car without some castings.
SIGMA is our sister company that sells, supports and develops SIGMASOFT Virtual Molding, a simulation software for the injection molding process. Their children also attended the all-day event. In the late morning, SIGMA showed how rubber bouncy balls are made and passed some rubber balls out to all of the children.
After lunch, the children were able to enjoy working with AFS’ Foundry in A Box. Melting little pieces of tin in small portable cauldrons (operated by the adults!) the children packed sand into their cope and drag around the mold of their starfish, turtles, butterfly or MAGMA Keychain.
After the sand was tightly packed, they removed the mold, reconnected the cope and drag and poured metal into the sprue. With fingers crossed, we waited for the forms to solidify.
Once removed from the sand and allowed to cool down, the children removed the gating system and smoothed out the rough edges on the part they were able to take home. Foundry in a Box is always a big hit!
They ended the day with a movie and popcorn. Another Take Your Daughters and Sons to Work Day is in the books here at MAGMA. We look forward to many more!
