Continuous Casting of Steel: Simulation & Optimization of the Submerged Entry Nozzle

The in-mold flow pattern produced by the SEN impacts multiple facets of the casting process. Temperature, velocity, and meniscus turbulence are just some of the factors that determine the final quality of the cast product. In this study, MAGMASOFT® and MAGMA CC is used to help determine the cause of deep longitudinal centerline cracking on late sequence slabs. Through modeling of the in-mold flow behavior, an alternative SEN design is compared with a traditional 2-port design to determine the impact the change has on the quality of the slab.
