The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leoben is led by Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. Wilfried Eichlseder and deals with fatigue strength and tribology. A large focus is on the development of new methodologies for the calculation of fatigue life of components under operating conditions using numerical simulation as well as fatigue trials on specimens and components. At the university, the institute is also involved in  teaching students about methods of modern mechanical engineering through simulation, design and trials.

Research activities in the area of fatigue life have the motto “from sample to component – in trial and simulation”. Research is dedicated to the examination of the influence of the production process on fatigue strength. In this area, the research group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering under the direction of Dr. Christoph Guster works together with MAGMA on the integration of casting simulation into the calculation of fatigue life for cast iron and aluminum components.
